Citizen Science: Globe at Night Project

All Day

Description

Join the “PBCLS 2025 Citizen Science: Globe at Night” Project!

This a scientific, ongoing collaboration between SciStarter and the Globe at Night Campaign. Join other citizen scientists by measuring your night sky brightness and submitting your observations to the Sky Tonight app. Your data, paired with time and location, will help create a light pollution map worldwide. It's easy to get involved - all you need is computer or smartphone.

Light pollution may be a global problem, but the solutions are local and it starts with you.

Happy sky gazing!

How to report:

  1. Download the free Sky Tonight app or any Night Sky observation app from the Apple Store or Play Store.
  2. Go outside at least one hour after sunset (8-10 pm local time) when the moon is not up. Let your eyes adjust to the dark for about 10 minutes, then start your first observation.
  3. Compare how many stars you can see in a constellation with how many stars you should be able to see.
  4. Once you have made your observations, visit the Globe at Night Reporter to record and submit your data, you will be asked five simple guided questions (Note: Question 3 is optional).
  5. You will be asked to provide the PBCLS SciStarter email. Please enter: ce@pbclibrary.org.
