Imaginary-Reality-Show Rom Coms

I can't even say I watch a lot of reality TV, but there's something about this setting in a book that's like catnip for me. You know you're getting an HEA when you pick up a romance, but the competition adds an element of surprise that I love. Does happily ever after mean taking home the title, too?

  • This book is the one that started me down the imaginary-reality-show path. It's the second novel in Sonali Dev's series about the Raje family (each one a reimagining of a Jane Austen novel) and the protagonists get paired up on a cooking show…

  • Cinderella meets The Bachelor in this cute story with a pretty, plus-size heroine who is also a fashionista looking to jump start her career. (Love a princess story retelling? This is the first in a series of grown-up Disney fairy tale retellings!)

  • The LGBTQ+ representation in this book is done so well. I love the diverse cast of characters, and the hijinks happening both on and off the set of this imaginary Bachelor-style show. Come for Charlie and Dev, but stay for Parisia (best friend…

  • It's kind of like Cake Wars, but there's also a whole side contest to get to bake a cake for royalty! I love this grumpy/sunshine pairing, and I wish I could visit their bakeries - they sound incredible. Don't read this one hungry.

  • Our protagonists have a lot of personal issues to work through in front of a wide audience on a popular cooking competition that's a bit like The Great British Bake Off (kind of). There's a lot of savory cooking, but this LGBTQ+ romance is very…

  • More of a contemporary with rom-com seasoning, this book is unique for its protagonist determined to showcase her Jewish roots in this Top Chef style cooking competition.

  • This book is the reason I started watching The Great British Bake Off (and by "started watching" I mean I binged all eleventeen seasons of it, plus the specials). I am very much not a fan of the love triangle trope, but Alexis Hall is such a good…

  • Book two (after Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake) in the Winner Bakes All series, and I may have liked this one more than the first. I think most people will either love or hate Paris, but I love his flawed, messy self. CW for anxiety and mental…

  • What's better than one imaginary-reality-television show? TWO imaginary-reality-television shows! We've got an off-grid, survivalist lumberjack who gets picked to join a talented Latin ballroom dancer on a Dancing with the Stars style show. I've got…

  • I have no idea if there is a show like this out there, but these two strangers have to convince their families and friends they're getting married in six weeks - and get their help to plan the wedding! The diversity and representation in this book…
